- Definition
- An instrument consisting of a gently waisted wooden resonance box of various sizes, with a sound hole in the middle of the upper third of the soundboard, a neck and headstock at the top end, a bridge at the bottom end and usually a set of four to six strings strung from the bridge to the tuning key-adjusted pegheads on the headstock. Used to produce sounds and chords by plucking the strings with the fingers or a plectrum, thereby causing them to vibrate.
