Definition
An instrument consisting of a round wooden or metal hoop with a screw-tensioned plastic or hide resonating membrane stretched over its cavity; equipped with a neck and headstock at the top end, a bridge and a set of four strings strung from the bridge to the tuning key-adjusted pegheads on the headstock; often equipped with a fifth thumb string. Used to produce sounds and chords by plucking the strings with the fingers or a plectrum, thereby causing them to vibrate.
